Gregg Hull, the MAGA Republican running for governor of New Mexico, said Medicaid, SNAP food benefits and free child care "empower this type of failure," and claimed New Mexicans have been "convinced that this is a lifestyle" so they "don't have to do anything" for themselves. More than 1 in 5 New Mexicans rely on SNAP to eat, and Medicaid covers 42% of the state, including a third of its children. They didn't choose a lifestyle. They are just trying to survive.
