Would Put New Mexico at the Service of Trump's ICE Detention Machine

Whether white, black, or brown, we should all be able to live in New Mexico and exercise our constitutional rights without fear that law enforcement will turn on us.

But the current administration has created a masked, unaccountable immigration force that current and former national security officials told ProPublica has become "an unfettered and unaccountable national police force" — one that has detained more than 170 U.S. citizens, kicking, dragging, and holding them for days. Where does Gregg Hull stand on all this?
  • Days after the U.S. Department of Justice sued New Mexico to block the state's Immigrant Safety Act — the law barring public bodies from signing ICE detention contracts — Hull defended the detention system: "Detention facilities unfortunately are a necessary part of doing the entire process," he said at an Albuquerque Journal town hall on May 11, 2026, adding: "I want to make sure people's rights are being protected but at the same time, the laws on the books are being enforced."
  • And he's made clear he'll cooperate rather than push back: "My goal will be to work with the administration to make sure that we're benefiting New Mexico to the best of its ability," he said, adding that "we cannot afford to disconnect ourselves from any federal administration."

At the very moment New Mexicans need a governor willing to stand up to an out-of-control federal police force, Gregg Hull is promising to work with it. We deserve better.

Opposes Any Ban on Any Firearm — in a State Where Guns Kill at Twice the National Rate

Guns kill New Mexicans at more than double the rate they kill Americans nationally — 26.6 gun deaths per 100,000 residents, against a national average of 12.8. In recent years the state has moved to do something about it, passing a background check requirement for all gun sales, an Extreme Risk ("red flag") law, a secure storage law, and a suite of domestic violence protections. Gregg Hull is running to lead that state — and says no firearm should ever be banned.
  • Asked whether he would support banning the sale of certain weapons, specifically semiautomatic firearms and machine guns, Hull's answer left nothing out: "I oppose any ban on any firearms."
  • He made clear that is a governing commitment, not just a primary-season position: "Law-abiding New Mexicans have a constitutional right to own firearms, and I will defend that right as Governor."
  • His alternative is to police the aftermath rather than limit the weapons — enforcement, he said, should focus "on violent offenders and prohibited possessors — not on restricting the rights of responsible citizens."

"Any ban on any firearms" includes the machine guns and semiautomatic weapons the question actually asked about. In a state that loses more than twice its share of people to gunfire, Gregg Hull's answer is that nothing is on the table. We deserve better.

Wants to Loosen the Rules on Fracking Wastewater — in the Driest State That Fights Over Water

We all deserve clean air, clean water, and a healthy place to live. In New Mexico, water is the whole ballgame — and the next governor will have more say over it than almost anyone, because the governor appoints the heads of the state agencies that write, enforce, and defend environmental rules. As E&E News put it in a story on this race, that means "regulations can ebb and flow with elections."

Here is what Gregg Hull says he would do with that power:
  • He ran on expanding oil and gas. Asked how to improve New Mexico's economic competitiveness, Hull's answer put fossil fuels near the top: he would "expand our energy portfolio including oil and gas." He told E&E News he would work to streamline the state's oil and gas permitting as governor, and warned that "whenever you talk about diminishing, declining, or you know, flat out eliminating that industry in the state of New Mexico, it puts everybody on edge." The outlet summed up his campaign in six words: Hull "has vowed to unleash oil and gas." New Mexico's oil production roughly doubled under Biden, from about 1.1 million barrels a day to 2.1 million; the state produced 2.3 million barrels a day in March 2026.
  • He wants to loosen the rules on the industry's toxic wastewater. On his own campaign site, Hull writes that "some current rules, especially around produced water handling, are overly complex and drive up costs without clear safety benefits. I support streamlining these rules so water can be safely treated and reused only within the industry while protecting our freshwater resources." "Produced water" is the waste that comes back up the well along with the oil. When New Mexico's own Water Quality Control Commission examined it across an 18-month rulemaking, it concluded the opposite of "without clear safety benefits": produced water "contains hundreds of known and unknown chemicals, many of which are toxic to human health and the environment", no technology can treat it safely at scale, and the state has no surface water quality standards for at least 180 of the potentially toxic chemicals in it. The Environment Department petitioned for the ban and backed it with testimony from five of its own scientists. In May 2025 the commission banned discharging it into New Mexico's ground and surface water.
  • And this is a live fight he would walk into on day one. On May 12, 2026 — the same month Hull was answering these questions — the Water Quality Control Commission voted 7–4 to open a rulemaking on a petition filed by an oil-and-gas-industry-led organization that would allow produced water to be discharged into New Mexico's surface and ground waters and used in agriculture. As written, it would be one of the most permissive oil and gas wastewater discharge rules in the country. The attorney fighting it noted that the Environment Department "is sitting on the sidelines while industry proposes to undo the rule NMED proposed and its scientists supported." Who runs that department next? Whoever wins in November.
  • His pitch for data centers is to put them where the fracking wastewater is. Asked by the Albuquerque Journal whether he would support water use limits on data centers — and separately whether he would support banning them — Hull answered the second question. "I oppose a blanket ban on data centers — they bring jobs and investment," he said, adding that facilities should be sited "where water and power resources can actually support them, like southeastern New Mexico where produced water is available." His answer to a state running out of water is to find more uses for the fracking industry's waste.
  • He wants to slow down New Mexico's clean energy law. On the Energy Transition Act, the state law governing the shift to cleaner electricity, Hull's position is the brakes: carrying it out responsibly "does not mean rushing changes without regard for cost, reliability, or how it affects New Mexicans", he writes, locating the concern in "the pace of the transition and the added mandates that have followed" and promising an independent review of grid reliability before the state goes further.
  • Across all nineteen of his campaign's priorities pages, he never once mentions climate change. Not on Oil & Gas, not on Energy Reliability, not on Energy Innovation, not on Water Future — and not on Wildfire Resilience, a page that opens by describing New Mexico communities "devastated by major fires" and families whose homes flood "again and again" from the burn scars left behind. The words "climate change" and "methane" do not appear anywhere on any of them. He can describe what is happening to New Mexico in detail. He will not name why.

New Mexico is running dry, burning, and flooding in the burn scars, and Gregg Hull's environmental platform is more drilling, faster permits, weaker rules on toxic wastewater, and a clean energy law with the brakes on. The water we poison is not coming back. We deserve better.

Won't Tell Voters Where He Stands on Abortion — or Even That He's a Republican

New Mexicans deserve to know exactly what they're voting for. Gregg Hull has plenty to say about crime, jobs, and education. But on abortion — one of the issues a New Mexico governor most directly controls — he has said nothing at all, and his campaign won't even tell voters which party he belongs to.
  • Handed a candidate questionnaire covering abortion, health care, immigration, education, elections, guns, and more, Hull declined to answer all 34 questions — including all five on abortion, among them whether Planned Parenthood should receive taxpayer funds.
  • When he entered the race, the Santa Fe New Mexican noted that his campaign website "makes no mention he is a Republican." More than a year later, his own pages still don't say it: the word appears on none of the nineteen priorities pages he has published, and the only "Republican" anywhere on gregghull.com sits inside an embedded social post advertising an event with "fellow Republican candidates." Abortion is absent from all nineteen too, healthcare included.

A candidate who won't say what he believes before the election shouldn't be trusted with the power to act on it after. We deserve better.
