Roger Marshall is tired of people asking whether he really lives in Kansas. In an August 17 Facebook post, the senator called the criticism "balonga" and offered voters a way to check for themselves:
"Scroll back through this feed. It's all right there. Kansas stops, DC meetings or TV hits, and a few fishing pics at home in rural Stafford County!"
So American Journal News did. It compared Marshall's Facebook posts with the public records of travel paid for by his Senate office, his campaign and his political action committee. On several dates, the posts showed Marshall at Kansas events while the expense records put him somewhere else. Most often that was Florida, where he has a second home in Sarasota.
The church service and the Key West lunch
The clearest example is from May 2024.
On May 11, 2024, Marshall posted about visiting the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center in Hutchinson. Two days later, he posted as if he had just been to church nearby:
"I always enjoy the opportunity to stop in and worship with Kansans across the state. Thank you to Central Christian Church in Wichita for letting me join you for worship."
His Senate office's expense report for the same stretch shows a flight from Washington, D.C., to Sarasota on May 10, returning four days later. The office coded that airfare as "senator transportation." Trips taken by his aides are coded differently, as "staff transportation."
And on May 11, the day of the Hutchinson post, Marshall's leadership PAC paid $292.41 for food at the Banana Cafe in Key West, according to its filing with the Federal Election Commission.
It keeps happening
American Journal News found the same pattern again and again. Marshall would post about a Kansas event days or weeks after it happened and present it as if it were new, while records placed him out of state:
- May 2023: Marshall posted about an Agricultural Business Council of Kansas City roundtable with Arkansas Sen. John Boozman. The event had actually happened in April. The same day he made the post, his PAC rented a room at the Ritz-Carlton in Fernandina Beach, Florida. It isn't clear whether the room was for Marshall or someone else.
- March 2024: Marshall posted a photo with high school students in Hays, Kansas. That event was in February. The next day, his PAC paid for a meal at a Sarasota steakhouse. The day after the steakhouse, Marshall posted again as if he were in Kansas, and the day after that, his Senate office reported buying event supplies in Sarasota.
- March 2023: His office spent close to $2,000 on travel while he spent nearly a week in Utah. During that week he made two Facebook posts, one suggesting he was meeting constituents in Bel Aire, Kansas, and another of him visiting a factory in Wichita.
- September 2023: He posted several times as if he were in Kansas while his office reported him on trips to Vermont and to Nashville, Tennessee.
None of this proves Marshall was never in Kansas on those days. It shows that the feed he told voters to trust doesn't line up with the records his own office and PAC filed.
Part of a bigger paper trail
This isn't the first set of records to cut against Marshall's story about where he lives and how he travels:
- The Kansas City Star found his taxpayer-funded trips through Sarasota were four times larger than earlier reporting showed, and one flight came five days after he signed off on a boat lift at his Florida house.
- Records show his ballot goes to a Kansas P.O. box, he held Florida fishing licenses from 2019 until May, his wife listed their Sarasota house as her main address, and the family pays about five times more in property taxes in Florida than in Kansas.
- Texts and calendars from his 2020 campaign appear to show his office using taxpayer money and congressional staff for campaign work.
Each one is a separate set of documents, and they all point the same way.
Why Kansans should care
A senator's job is to show up for the state that elected him. When he posts about Kansas from a beach town and bills the trip to taxpayers as "senator transportation," the people paying for it deserve to know.
Marshall is in an unexpectedly close race against Democrat Adam Hamilton, a pastor who says Marshall only "pretends to live in Kansas." Marshall's defense was his Facebook feed, and the feed doesn't match his own expense records.
What the filings show
Roger Marshall told Kansans to scroll through his Facebook feed to see that he's home in Kansas. Expense records from his Senate office and his PAC show that on at least five occasions in 2023 and 2024, his posts suggested he was in Kansas while those records pointed to Florida, Utah, Vermont or Tennessee. That includes a May 2024 church post from Wichita that came during a taxpayer-paid trip to Sarasota and a PAC-paid lunch in Key West.
