Roger Marshall has spent his Senate race attacking his Democratic opponent, the Rev. Adam Hamilton, for owning four homes.

Now public records show where Marshall's own life has been happening: Sarasota, Florida.

A Kansas Reflector investigation published September 18 found that Marshall and his wife "put down roots in Sarasota, hosting fundraising events, obtaining real estate and fishing licenses and filing paperwork from the coastal Florida town while the senator worked in Washington, D.C., and claimed Kansas as home."

What the records show

Here is what the Reflector found, piece by piece:

• His ballot goes to a P.O. box. Kansas voting records show Marshall's ballot is mailed to a P.O. box — the same one his campaign committee uses as its mailing address.
• He fished as a Florida license holder for years. Florida wildlife records show Marshall held active Florida fishing licenses from 2019 until May of this year.
• His wife listed Florida as home. Laina Marshall held a Florida real estate license from 2021 to 2023 and has an application pending for another one. The main address on that application is the Marshalls' Florida house.
• He signed away his Kansas house in Florida. Marshall sold the Great Bend home where the family raised their kids within days of being sworn into the Senate in 2021. The deed was notarized in Sarasota on January 13, 2021.
• His family pays more to Florida. Based on county property records in both states, the family has paid roughly five times as much in property taxes in Florida as in Kansas during Marshall's time in the Senate.
• He only just changed his filing address. Marshall kept listing his old Great Bend address on federal candidate filings until September 11 of this year, when he switched it to a house in rural Stafford County.
• He raises money there. Marshall held a "Sarasota retreat" fundraiser with his own political committees and the Kansas Republican Party in 2024 and 2025. Politico published the invitation to the second one, at the St. Regis Longboat Key Resort.

The Reflector sent Marshall's campaign a detailed list of questions. After first acknowledging them, the Reflector wrote, a spokesperson "did not respond to questions about Marshall's primary residence, personal travel to Florida and his wife's real estate dealings."

What Marshall says

Marshall says his home is a three-bedroom house on more than 300 acres in Stafford County. Others have described it as a hunting cabin.

"I only wish I had a home in Florida," Marshall told reporters in August, according to the Topeka Capital-Journal.

He did have one. The Marshalls bought the Sarasota house for $1.2 million in 2019. At the Kansas State Fair debate in Hutchinson, the first of the race, Marshall's defense was that hurricanes had made it unlivable: "You'll be glad to know it was struck by two hurricanes and has been uninhabitable for two years." The house is mostly rebuilt and on the market for $1.45 million, according to the Reflector.

He also said he used it to see his grandchildren. "I don't think anybody in Kansas would hold it against somebody for wanting to go visit their grandchildren," he said.

The crowd in Hutchinson didn't buy it. "My home is a short hour's drive down a gravel road here," Marshall told them, and the Reflector reported that the crowd "groaned, laughed and jeered." As he explained the Florida house, a chant swelled from the bleachers: "You don't live here."

Your tax dollars went to Florida too

This isn't only about where Marshall sleeps. It's about who paid for his trips there.

We've already reported what the Kansas City Star found: Marshall charged Kansas taxpayers $18,886 for at least 14 official trips through the part of Florida where he owns a beach house. It is against the law for a senator to use taxpayer money for personal travel.

Marshall says he represents Kansas. The paperwork keeps pointing south.

The four-homes attack

Marshall's campaign has made Hamilton's homes an issue. Hamilton is registered to vote in Stilwell, Kansas, where he and his wife live. He also owns a lake house in the Missouri Ozarks and two homes he says he bought for his adult daughters, in Lawrence and Kansas City.

Every one of those homes is in Kansas or neighboring Missouri. Marshall's second home is in Florida, and it's where his family's biggest property tax bills go.

He isn't the only Republican on this site with this problem. Tom Cotton asked for his Arkansas ballot to be mailed to Virginia, and a lawsuit says Tommy Tuberville hasn't lived in Alabama long enough to run for governor.

What the record shows
