Wants to Hand California Doctors Over to Anti-Abortion States

Decisions about pregnancy should be made by a woman, her family, and her doctor — not by politicians, and least of all by politicians in another state.

California voters enshrined reproductive freedom in our state constitution, and state law shields California doctors who provide abortion care from prosecution by anti-abortion states. Steve Hilton would tear that shield down.

Hilton said that as governor he would allow Louisiana to extradite a California doctor accused of prescribing abortion pills to a Louisiana patient — a doctor California currently protects.
His reasoning — "you can't have one state imposing its will on another" — gets it exactly backwards: it would let Louisiana's abortion ban reach into California and pull our doctors out of the state for prosecution.
Pressed on this at the gubernatorial debates, Hilton doubled down rather than back off.

A governor who would extradite our doctors to anti-abortion states would make every California abortion provider a target. We deserve better.

Spread Deadly COVID Misinformation to Millions

In a public health emergency, we all deserve leaders who give us the facts and help us protect one another.

Steve Hilton did the opposite. During the deadliest public health crisis in a century, he used his Fox News show — reaching millions of viewers — to tell people the danger wasn't real.

Hilton told his audience "most people have nothing to fear" from the virus and that "the shutdowns are pointless" — as Americans died by the hundreds of thousands.
He spun a story that Dr. Anthony Fauci "commissioned the work which resulted in the virus's development" — claims PolitiFact found "rely on a series of unsubstantiated allegations to spin a conspiracy theory".
He then went further, calling for Dr. Fauci to be prosecuted.

When Californians needed facts, Steve Hilton sold them conspiracy theories. We deserve better.

Free and fair elections are the foundation of everything else — they're how we the people hold power accountable, and we should all be able to trust the results.

After the 2020 election, Steve Hilton used his national platform to cast doubt on them. He demanded an investigation into claims of election fraud on his Fox News broadcast — and Trump himself tweeted the clips.

Stands With Trump's Horrendous Immigration Crackdown

Whether white, black, or brown, we should all be able to live in California and exercise our constitutional rights without fear that law enforcement will turn on us.

But the current administration has created a masked, unaccountable immigration force that ProPublica describes as "an unfettered and unaccountable national police force" — one that has detained more than 170 U.S. citizens — and nowhere has it operated more aggressively than California. Steve Hilton's response?

Asked directly by a reporter if he supports Trump's immigration enforcement tactics, Hilton said "Everybody supports -- I can't imagine a single person who doesn't support what's been done to close our southern border and stop this absolutely outrageous undermining of the law we saw in the Biden years."
Trump rewarded the loyalty with his "COMPLETE & TOTAL ENDORSEMENT" of Hilton's campaign.

As masked agents grab people off California streets, Steve Hilton says "everybody supports" it. We don't. We deserve better.

Would Gut California's Environmental Protections

We all want clean air to breathe, clean water to drink, and open spaces our kids can grow up enjoying.

Californians live with the reality of climate change every year — wildfires, drought, and extreme heat. Steve Hilton's plan is to dismantle the protections we built to fight it.

On his own campaign platform, Hilton vows to "Sunset our regulatory code, so regulations go away" and attacks the California Air Resources Board and "air quality" bureaucracies for "arbitrary nonsense like VMT (Vehicle Miles Traveled) rules, even as they try and ban gas cars."
He wants to open undeveloped land to housing — arguing "Only around 5% of our land is developed" — and would gut CEQA, California's landmark environmental law, claiming "around 70% of CEQA lawsuits are used to block housing."
He has also campaigned on reversing the state's greenhouse gas reduction mandates as part of undoing what he calls one-party rule.

Steve Hilton would trade California's air, water, and open spaces for a talking point. We deserve better.

Wants to Bring the DOGE Playbook to Sacramento

We all want a government that works for us as efficiently and effectively as possible. Real reform is badly needed — but given how big and complicated government is, it takes careful, well-thought-out solutions so we don't make things worse.

That's not what DOGE was. Elon Musk's operation tore through the federal government — mass layoffs, gutted services, and cuts that hit California harder than almost any state. Steve Hilton's answer? Do it again, from the governor's office.

Hilton launched his own "CAL DOGE" — a state version of Musk's operation that his campaign says will "reduce or eliminate the size and scope of state agencies."
His blueprint for California calls for bureaucracy to be "stripped away in a manner similar to Donald Trump's executive orders and Elon Musk's attempted dismantling of federal agencies" — including shrinking the state workforce by 50,000 jobs and repealing worker protection laws.

Californians watched what DOGE did to federal services. Steve Hilton wants to run the same experiment on our state. We deserve better.

Sold Britain on Brexit — Then Moved Here

We all want leaders who stick around to live with the consequences of what they sell us.

Steve Hilton isn't that. Before he wanted to run California, he helped talk the United Kingdom into one of the most damaging self-inflicted wounds in its modern history.

Hilton was a prominent, vocal champion of the 2016 Brexit campaign — breaking with the prime minister he had advised to do it.
He didn't stay to live with the consequences. He built a new life in California — where a CalMatters profile chronicles how he has "rebranded himself multiple times" — from Cameron confidant, to Silicon Valley futurist, to Fox News populist, to candidate for governor.

Steve Hilton has already run one great experiment on a country he then left. California shouldn't be his next one. We deserve better.
