On July 27, 2026, Donald Trump held a rally at the General Motors Proving Grounds in Milford Township. He called his endorsed Michigan Republicans up on stage. John James, the congressman running for governor, took the microphone and opened with this:

"Thank you, Mr. President, for coming to Michigan, where you've won three times."

Trump has been on the Michigan ballot three times. He won in 2016. He won in 2024. He lost in 2020.

C-SPAN clipped the moment and titled it exactly what it was: "GOP Gov. Candidate John James Falsely Claims Pres. Trump Won Michigan Three Times."

The 2020 result isn't in dispute

Michigan's 2020 presidential election is one of the most examined elections in the state's history, and it keeps producing the same answer.

Joe Biden beat Donald Trump in Michigan by more than 154,000 votes. The Board of State Canvassers certified the result on November 23, 2020, after all 83 counties finished canvassing.

Then Michigan checked its own work. Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson's office ran a statewide audit and announced in February 2021 that the process affirmed the accuracy of the state's vote-counting machines and confirmed the outcome.

James offered no evidence for his claim. He didn't need to make it at all — Trump's actual two Michigan wins were right there. He chose to add the third.

He wasn't the only one doing it that day

James's line came at a rally where election denial was in the air. As the Michigan Advance reported, Trump used the event to raise the specter of Michigan's elections being stolen — not just in 2020, but in 2024 as well. He also claimed that Mike Rogers, his hand-picked Senate candidate, had actually won his 2024 Senate race. Rogers lost that race to Elissa Slotkin.

Sam Newton, communications director for the Democratic Governors Association, said James "is focusing his campaign on pandering to Donald Trump's lies and conspiracies."

James has done this before — about his own race

Here's what makes this more than a one-off applause line at a rally.

In 2020, John James was on the Michigan ballot himself, running for U.S. Senate against Gary Peters. He lost. And he refused to concede for three weeks, claiming without evidence that there were "deep concerns that millions of Michiganders may have been disenfranchised by a dishonest few who cheat."

Peters's response at the time: "It is sad and it is pathetic. They lost."

Six years later, James is still telling Michigan voters that the 2020 election in their state didn't go the way the official, audited, certified count says it went.

Why this matters for a governor's race

This isn't a debate about history. Michigan's governor has real power over how elections are run in the state — appointments, funding, and the decision of whether to back or block changes to election law. A candidate who tells crowds that his state's certified results were wrong is telling voters what he'd do with that power.

James is also asking Michigan to trust his account of the facts on everything else. Consider what else he has told them:

• He backed Trump's war with Iran and called it "worth fighting for" — even while admitting the war "hurts everybody around the state, around the country." He then voted against ending it.
• That war helped drive Michigan gas prices up more than 61%, and pushed fuel and fertilizer costs high enough to put Michigan farms under real financial pressure.

A man who won't accept a vote count that was audited by his own state is not a man who is going to level with you about your gas bill.

The bottom line

John James stood on a stage in Milford Township and told Michigan that Donald Trump has won their state three times. The certified count, the canvass of all 83 counties, and the state's own audit all say otherwise.

He said it because the crowd wanted to hear it, and because the president standing behind him wanted to hear it. He didn't say it because it's true.

Michigan voters deserve a governor who can say out loud who won an election in their own state. We deserve better.
