The Trump administration is building a second border wall across Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument in Arizona. An 89-year-old Hia-Ced O'odham elder warned it would disturb her ancestors' graves. Fifteen days later, Native American remains turned up in soil overturned by the wall's contractors. Trump's first administration had already waived the law that protects those graves at Organ Pipe.
The Constitution says the census counts 'the whole number of persons in each State.' A letter led by Mary Miller asks the Commerce Department to count only citizens when it hands out House seats, add a citizenship question, and drop questions about race and ethnicity. Six former Census directors who served under presidents of both parties say the rule they're backing puts the 2030 count at risk.
USCIS approved about 55,000 citizenship applications from April to June, down from more than 230,000 in the same months a year earlier. Stateline calculates that nearly 380,000 people who would have become citizens at the old pace didn't — almost all of them adults who could have voted on Nov. 3.
