On Thursday, July 2, 2026, a Newsmax host asked the fourth-ranking Republican in the House of Representatives a fair question: why is socialism suddenly popular with so many Americans?

Lisa McClain did not answer it. She told those Americans to leave the country.

"We have a democracy. We have freedom of speech. We have love of country. And for the people in our country who want to turn this country into a communist country, leave, you're free to leave. The beauty about America is you can leave. Go to Europe where they're experiencing this heat wave and they don't have any air condition. See how well that works for you? I'm proud to be an American. I respect the flag, and I respect the people who made the sacrifice to make this country what it is today."

That's the full transcript of the remark. She was asked about the "socialist momentum" inside the Democratic Party, and in the same answer she added: "If you want something, you have to work for it. You have to earn it."

McClain has represented Michigan's 9th District, north of Detroit, since 2021. She is the House Republican Conference Chair — the No. 4 job in House Republican leadership, and the person whose actual assignment is to decide what her party says and how it says it. This wasn't a backbencher venting. This was the message shop.

The mockery was immediate

The line that got the attention was the air conditioning. Economist Tony Annett: "Today I learned that what separates capitalism from communism is air conditioning!" Tennis champion Martina Navratilova said McClain "wouldn't know a communist if they were in bed with her." Journalist John Harwood asked, "Can the Republican Party get any dumber?"

The dunking is fun. It's also beside the point. Strip out the heat wave and what's left is a member of Congress in leadership telling fellow Americans — people who vote, pay taxes, and in tens of thousands of cases live in her own district — that if they don't like how things are going here, the door is over there.

What people are actually upset about

McClain's own party knows the answer to the question she was asked, because they said it out loud three weeks later.

On July 21, 2026, McClain hosted a Capitol Hill roundtable called "A Warning to America: Stories from Survivors of Communism." At that event, Rep. Nicole Malliotakis described what she thinks is fueling the whole thing:

"This idea that the socialists are trying to sell it as an affordability, and that it's going to make life more affordable and accessible is just ludicrous."

So even the people running the anti-communism programming understand that the ground under it is affordability. People can't cover rent, groceries, insurance, and a car payment on what they make. That's the grievance. McClain's response to it was to suggest emigration.

Her own district is the argument against her

Here's the part that makes "you're free to leave" hard to take from this particular member of Congress: the people struggling in Michigan's 9th District are struggling partly because of bills she voted for.

• Health coverage. An estimated 28,864 people in MI-09 are projected to lose health coverage under the health care cuts — 15,200 losing Affordable Care Act coverage and 13,664 losing Medicaid. McClain voted for the budget bill that made those cuts on July 3, 2025.
• Food. 29,016 households in her district — about 9% of them — rely on SNAP, including 12,586 households with children and 11,546 with a senior over 60. That same budget bill cut food assistance too.
• Prices. Asked on CNN in April 2025 about the tariffs raising costs on everything, McClain acknowledged "short-term discomfort" and said the average consumer might be "a little uncomfortable."

"A little uncomfortable." That's what she called it when it was her party's policy raising your grocery bill. When somebody says out loud that they're not okay with it, the answer is to get on a plane.

She's told people not to worry before

There's a documented pattern here of McClain telling constituents their fear is the problem rather than the thing they're afraid of.

In March 2025, on a telephone town hall, a caller named Beverly told McClain her disabled son depends on Medicaid and she was scared it would be cut. McClain told her: "Let me put your mind at ease. Do not listen to the Democrats that are fearmongering. There are no cuts to Medicaid." Four months later she voted for the bill that cut it. We laid out that whole record — and several other things she's said that turned out not to be true — in Lisa McClain's Advice to Politicians: "Just Tell the Truth."

And when angry constituents started showing up at Republican town halls that same spring, McClain told MSNBC the goal was "to communicate with our constituents, not an organized disruptor funded by George Soros." Her own events were by telephone.

Complain about Medicaid, you're being fearmongered. Show up in person, you're a paid disruptor. Say the system isn't working for you, go to Europe. There is no version of raising a concern that this member of Congress treats as legitimate.

The leadership habit

McClain isn't the only Republican leader whose response to economic anger is to deny that the anger is real. A month after McClain's Newsmax appearance, House Majority Whip Tom Emmer went on Fox Business and told Maria Bartiromo that voter frustration is "perception," and that eggs cost 78 cents and milk is under $2. The Bureau of Labor Statistics says eggs were $2.14 a dozen and milk was $4.32 a gallon.

And when a problem is undeniable, the reflex is to point somewhere else. In July 2026, McClain and three other Michigan Republicans sent a letter demanding Canada do something about wildfire smoke blowing into Michigan — all four of them carrying League of Conservation Voters scores at or near zero. McClain's is 0% for 2025 and 1% for her career.

Somebody else's fault. Somebody else's country. Somebody else's problem.

You can't leave your own district

Most of the 29,016 households on SNAP in Michigan's 9th District are not moving to Europe. Neither are the 28,864 people losing health coverage, or the seniors, or the families with kids. They live in Macomb, St. Clair, Lapeer, Sanilac and Huron counties, and their representative in Congress is Lisa McClain, and her advice for them — if they say out loud that this isn't working — is to get out.

We're not asking for much. When people tell you they can't afford their lives, the job is to listen and then do something about it. Not to lecture them about air conditioning. Not to call them communists. And not to tell Americans that the country belongs to the people who agree with you.

We deserve better.
