Brandon Herrera is the Republican running for Congress in Texas's 23rd District, endorsed by President Trump. Here is how he talks about mothers who speak up about gun violence:

"Being a mother doesn't make your opinion any more or less valid. Just because you let somebody creampie you doesn't mean I have to give a shit about political opinions."

"The fact that you kept your c*m trophy doesn't make you any less wrong about the dumb shit that you say."

The "c*m trophy" he's referring to is a child.

He was attacking Shannon Watts, the founder of Moms Demand Action — the gun violence prevention group started after the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. The remarks come from a January 2023 video Herrera posted, and they resurfaced this month as he runs for Congress.

And it wasn't a one-time slip

This isn't a single ugly line from years ago. Herrera has gone back to the same well repeatedly.

In a 2026 YouTube video, he said Moms Demand Action was "not a MILF dating site," and joked that the mothers in the group were only "M's" — a crude way of saying he didn't find them attractive enough. That's a candidate for the United States Congress rating the appearance of women who organize against school shootings.

The reporting notes several other things about Herrera that surfaced along with it: jokes about killing older people, a video recreating the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr., an appearance in a Sons of Confederate Veterans recruitment video, and boasting about owning a copy of Mein Kampf.

Texas Republicans ran away rather than answer

Here's the part that says the most about the party backing him.

On July 23, 2026, a reporter tried asking Texas Republican members of Congress a simple question about their party's candidate and his remarks about Shannon Watts. Raw Story documented what happened:

• Rep. Chip Roy said "I gotta go" and walked off before the reporter could finish the question.
• Ronny Jackson refused to answer and headed up the Capitol steps.
• Rep. Troy Nehls looked like he might respond — then threw up his hands and turned away when the remark was repeated.

Three sitting members of Congress, all from Texas, none willing to say a single word about a candidate their party is trying to send to Washington from their own state.

If Herrera's comments were defensible, one of them would have defended them. If they were indefensible, one of them could have said so. Instead they ran.

That's not a small thing. Refusing to answer for the people you're helping elect is how this stuff keeps happening.

Why the target matters

It matters a lot that the group Herrera picked was Moms Demand Action.

Herrera built his following as a gun YouTuber. Moms Demand Action was founded in response to the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, and its members are overwhelmingly parents who got involved after gun violence touched their community.

Herrera's response to those parents isn't an argument about the Second Amendment. It's a sexual insult about how their children were conceived.

That's the choice he made — not once, in a bad moment, but as a recurring bit for an audience.

What he'd actually do in office

The vulgarity gets the clicks, but the votes are what would change people's lives. Herrera has made full support for Trump's agenda the centerpiece of his campaign — and that agenda has already hit TX-23 hard:

• Trump's budget bill cut health care for 17 million Americans, including nearly 12 million Medicaid recipients. More than 41,000 people in TX-23 were at risk of losing their coverage.
• The same bill made the largest cut to food assistance in history — $186 billion. More than 31,000 people in TX-23 rely on SNAP to buy groceries.

The bottom line

A candidate for Congress called a child a "c*m trophy" to insult mothers organizing against gun violence, mocked those mothers' looks on YouTube this year, and has never apologized for any of it.

His party's response was to endorse him and then sprint away from reporters.

The people of Texas's 23rd District deserve a representative who can talk about guns, or health care, or groceries, without talking like this.
