Early Monday morning, October 12, federal agents searched the Washington-area home of Rep. Ilhan Omar, a Minnesota Democrat. The search was carried out by Homeland Security Investigations under a judge-approved warrant, and is reportedly tied to a probe of immigration paperwork a relative filed when Omar was a child, Mother Jones reported. No charges have been announced.
Randy Fine, the Republican congressman from Florida, celebrated it on X:
"In honor of Indigenous People Day, President Trump is working hard to reunite Omar with her countrymen in Somalia!"
That's according to The Floridian, a conservative Florida outlet that framed the post as Fine "commending" the raid.
Omar's countrymen are Americans
Omar came to the United States from Somalia in 1995, when she was 12, fleeing civil war. She became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 2000.
Her countrymen are Americans — including the voters of Minnesota's 5th District, where she is heavily favored to win again in three weeks. Fine's post doesn't argue about any paperwork. It says a U.S. citizen and sitting member of Congress belongs in Somalia, and it frames that as a gift for Indigenous Peoples' Day.
Fine has said it straight before. "She should be denaturalized and deported. I mean, the woman hates America. She's up to her eyeballs in both welfare fraud and immigration fraud. They should all go home," he told The Floridian. "They never should have been brought here in the first place."
"They should all go home." Not Omar — they.
The timing
The search came 22 days before the November 3 midterms, in which Omar is heavily favored to win. Justice Department policy bars prosecutors and agents from timing investigations or charges to affect an election, Mother Jones noted, and while it isn't a binding rule, the department has historically paused related actions in the 60 days before a vote.
Trump told reporters he had "nothing to do with it" — and in the same breath called Omar "totally crooked" and her native Somalia a "non-country," The Washington Sun reported. Trump has spent years pushing a right-wing claim that Omar married her brother as part of an immigration scheme. The Sun notes that no federal agency has produced evidence supporting that accusation, and Omar has called it "disgusting lies."
"Make no mistake: this is an attempt to target political enemies and weaponize federal law enforcement," Omar posted Monday. "I will not be silenced."
Randy Fine's record
This is not a one-off for Randy Fine. On national TV, he said "a Muslim terrorist runs the city of New York" about the city's elected mayor. At a Republican donor summit, he called the "rise of Islam in America" the elephant in the room.
He's not the only Republican on this site who wants Omar gone, either. Senator Tommy Tuberville said Omar, a citizen for 26 years, should be deported: "Send her back where she came from."
Fine represents Florida's 6th District. He is on the ballot November 3.
What we know
Hours after Homeland Security agents searched the home of Rep. Ilhan Omar — a U.S. citizen since 2000 — 22 days before the election, Rep. Randy Fine posted that Trump was "working hard to reunite Omar with her countrymen in Somalia." He has also said Omar should be "denaturalized and deported" and that "they should all go home."
